Top International Retailers Have a Few Things in Common

Free shipping - whether it's always free, requires a minimum purchase or is part of a membership program like Amazon Prime - is one of the ideal ways to boost conversions, as free shipping is a benefit that many online shoppers have come to expect - and that's not just in the U.S.

The newest edition of the X-Border Payments Optimization Index from Digital River finds that 100 percent of the highest performing cross-border e-commerce sites not only offer global consumers free shipping, but also boast a mobile-optimized experience.

The study evaluated 180 international online stores across nearly 60 attributes to determine the aforementioned "highest performing" cross-border e-commerce sites. In additional to be mobile-friendly and offering free shipping, the top 10 scoring sites offer a variety of language, payment and currency options, as well as country-specific address fields and easy checkouts.

According to the report, the United States remains the leader in cross-border e-commerce optimization; U.S. e-commerce sites scored an average of 64 out of 100 and excelled in online navigation, cost, payment and privacy attributes.

“With a $300 billion cross-border e-commerce opportunity at stake, merchants can’t afford to optimize some parts of their global shopping experience at the expense of others,” said Hayden Reed, Digital River’s senior vice president and general manager of Digital River World Payments. “Delivering a cross-border experience that is as convenient and familiar as purchasing from your neighborhood store requires merchants to take a holistic approach to building their e-commerce sites. Using our Index, they can zero in on specific actions that will help them meet and exceed consumer expectations.”
