With shopping cart abandonment rates at more than 70 percent and costing Internet retailers an estimated $18 billion every year, according to Forrester, merchants should welcome the results of a recent survey from Econsultancy. Two thousand online shoppers from the U.K. were asked to identify the different reasons for leaving retail websites at various stages of the purchase process, and these were some of the more interesting findings. Nearly half of the respondents said they look for trustmarks (48 percent) and clear contact details (46 percent) immediately upon entering a site. Almost three quarters of the shoppers (74.5 percent) said they preferred seeing all shipping and delivery information on product pages rather than at checkout, and more than half of them (53.4 percent) said the same thing about return policy information.
