Twitter Discovery & Bing Search

Posted on 6.29.2014

Bing users will now be able to more fully explore Twitter that will showcase tweets, profiles and trending hashtags directly from within the search results.

The central idea behind the approach, according to Bing, is that "the most interesting content on Twitter can be determined by a combination of a tweet’s popularity, its freshness and the authority of the user tweeting it."  Bing looked at a number of signals including tweet quality, retweet count, recency, user profile info and verified status, among others. By placing these signals in its algorithmic model, it serves what it hopes are top quality results.

The feature relies heavily on Bing's auto-complete and auto-suggestion technologies. When a user begins typing in the search box with the "#" symbol, Bing will automatically display matching hashtag suggestions, and displays specific Twitter handles when users start typing with the "@" symbol.
