Twitter Gets Direct

Posted on 11.20.2014

Twitter has unveiled a new feature that enables users to share tweets privately via Direct Messages with any of their followers.

To use the feature, users simply need to tap the “... More” icon and select “Share via Direct Message” from Twitter.com or TweetDeck. However, in the iOS and Android apps, users must long-press the tweet in their timeline and choose “Share via Direct Message.” Then, the person who the tweet was shared with will receive a push notification and the Tweet will display directly in the private conversation.

“Twitter is already a great place for public conversation; now it’s also easier to privately discuss things you care about,” the Twitter blog states.

While this update isn’t a huge change for the social network, it could be somewhat beneficial for brands as someone may be willing to share a tweet privately that they would not have otherwise interacted with publicly, which could provide brands with a boost in engagement and visibility.
