Ubuntu Server 13.10 Delivering Speed, Scalability

Posted on 10.16.2013

Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, announced the next version for server and cloud environments will be released today.

Typically used in large deployments, this release of Ubuntu offers up a cloud deployment experience suite for small customers to support developing and testing environments. The release will make it possible to deploy a full OpenStack cloud on just 5 servers, offering the "Landscape" dashboard for the management of Ubuntu OpenStack cloud regardless of their size.

With Landscape, we simplify the lives of enterprise compliance and administration teams, with a full suite of compliance, performance monitoring and security update tools that work on all cloud and physical environments. Now we’ve added real-time dashboards for your OpenStack cloud, too” says Federico Lucifredi, the lead on Ubuntu's server product management team.

Ubuntu itself is an operating system, but the product is maturing thanks to work by Canonical and the Ubuntu community, who are focused on deliving solutions and applications on top of it. For example, the Juju service orchestration tool simplifies the process of designing, deploying, managing and scaling workloads. In the latest version of Ubuntu, Juju can deploy an entire software environemnt as a bundle from a rather intuitive GUI - a dramatic improvement from when Ubuntu admins how to deploy individual components.
