Urbanspoon Acquired by Budding Restaurant Discovery Service

Posted on 1.13.2015

Consumer reviews are one of the most influential things on the Internet.

Whether reviews are written about the newest televisions, computer or restaurants, consumers like to hear what others have to say about popular products and services.

Urbanspoon, a restaurant information and recommendation service, has recently been acquired by Zomato, a restaurant search and discovery service.

According to the official blog post announcing the acquisition, Zomato will be integrating both the Urbanspoon website and app into their own. Part of what makes this acquisition so interesting is that alone Zomato sees just more than 35 million visits a month but when combined with Urbanspoon's loyal user base, the company will more than double the amount of active visits it sees a month coming in at more than 80 million.

“Urbanspoon has been a dominant player in the US, Canada and Australia for years now, and it’s a great business that’s been built on a solid foundation of exhaustive, rich local restaurant content,” states the Zomato blog post announcing the Urbanspoon acquisition.

“Everything they’ve done has been powered by a fantastic team that shares our vision and core values, and brings a wealth of local knowledge and expertise to the table. As we stand here now, we felt joining forces with Urbanspoon would be the best way to turbocharge our growth and make our way into the US, Canada and Australia.”
