Very Few Retailers Offer Same-Day, Next-Day Delivery

Posted on 9.20.2015

Despite same-day and next-day delivery being a huge part of Amazon's business model (and appeal for that matter), an overwhelming majority of e-commerce sites are ill-prepared to match this level of convenience.

New research from Trustev compares how many of the top 50 online retailers offer same-day or next-day delivery and how much it costs. Amazon and 1-800Flowers are the only two which offer same-day delivery via their standard checkout and only 48 percent of the top 50 retailers offer next-day delivery, but at a whopping average cost of $22.38.

While consumers will pay for convenience, retailers will need to do better.

The problem, however, is that retailers must exercise caution when offering this option, according to Trustev. This is because retailers wanting to offer same-day or next-day delivery will need to manually review online transactions before authorization in an effort to reduce the risk of fraud.

Trustev utilizes human intelligence and machine learning to improve this process by analyzing visitors' behavior and devices before they buy, then examining thousands of human intelligence datapoints while they buy and then using machine learning after they buy to keep improving results. This level of security could help retailers speed up authorization processes to get shipments out quicker, but there are other factors at play as well, of course (e.g. shipping logistics).
