What Retailer Would EVER use AdSense for Shopping?
A bit of rant... so bear with me. Google announced in early/mid-September that it was launching AdSense for Shopping, a product it believes will help retailers like Walmart "monetize" their site traffic.
I realize it's been a month since the official announcement from Google, but I wanted to be absolutely sure I wasn't reading some sort of practical joke, because you would have to be out of your ever-loving digital mind to use a product like this on your website - especially if you're an online retailer.
The program enables e-commerce merchants to place Product Listing Ads, such as those seen on Google.com, onto their websites. Now while that would make a whole lot of sense if the system enabled you to sell your own products (of course, most merchants already have quite sophisticated merchandising solutions in place), it doesn't make any sense at all if the aim is to keep visiting prospects' eyes on your own products.
Google indicated that they are currently working with Walmart and a limited set of retail and commerce publishers (that, apparently, don't know any better). Seems like there has to be a better way to make a few bucks, right? As an online retailer, would you ever consider putting Google Ads on your website (in direct competition with your own products)?
