Who has the Best New gTLD?

Posted on 7.31.2012

There are still many uncertainties surrounding the potential new gTLDs that ICANN will be releasing in the upcoming months, however that hasn’t stopped web workers from speculating about what this move could mean for the future of the web.

While Google put millions of dollars into acquiring whimsical strings like .boo, .fun and .meme, the typical business professional is more interested in strings like .ads, .email or .services. Yet it is important to note that once the strings are approved, it is up to the owner of the new gTLD whether or not they will sell second-level registrations to the general public – for example, if Amazon becomes the owner of .deal, it would be up to Amazon if they would let others, such as Groupon, purchase a second level domain like That being said, web workers should still be keeping their eyes on a few specific strings.

Review the list below for some ideas of the best gTLD’s that retailers, marketers, affiliates and designers should keep on their radar:

It will be important for some retailers and service providers to pay attention to more specific strings, such as .beauty, .cafe, .fashion, .menu, .organic or .men. However, there are also an abundance of other strings that almost every merchant will be interested in, including .blackfriday, .buy, .bargains, .cheap, .coupon, .deals, .discount, .ecom, .forsale, .free, .new, .sale, .services, .shop, .shopping and .store.

Many of the proposed gTLDs could become great tools for marketing initiatives, including one of our favorites – .buzz. A few other strings that marketers should keep their eyes on include .ads, .blackfriday, .compare, .email, .events, .promo, .search and .marketing.

Most affiliates will want to keep niche related terms on their radar, such as .dentist, .carinsurance or .pets. However, a few other strings that might be useful in the future of performance marketing include .press, .link, .partners, .deal and .social.

There are many strings available that relate to design and development, including the most sought after .app. Yet, designers will also want to monitor these potential strings: .design, .dev, .diy, .graphics, .photography, .photo, .video, .technology and .tech.

Other Strings to Watch

While some of the aforementioned strings might be useful to your business or industry, web workers should check out the full list of potential strings on ICANN's website. It is also important to note that during a Website Magazine Facebook poll, most web workers claim that they would want to acquire the .events domain, followed by .report, .feedback, .review and .shop.
