Will it be a Happy Hiring Season?
While job optimism reached a six-year peak last year, 77 percent of small business owners will not hire new employees this holiday season according to a new Manta survey conducted earlier this month.
Even so, Manta's annual holiday index shows that small businesses hiring holiday help is up 5 percent from 2013 and 2014, and up 10 percent from 2012.
Of those that are hiring new employees, however, 65 percent of them plan to hire one or more full-time employees and at roughly the same rates as before (nearly 50 percent say hourly rates will stay the same). While some industries peak during the holiday season, others like business services experience a winter slump - and don't do much to turn it around.
Of those who experience a winter sales slump, roughly 50 percent of them do not offer holiday specials or promotions to generate more business, as they've found that specials and promotions do little to help increase business.
