Win Local E-Commerce With Better Store Fulfillment

Ship-from-store and in-store pickup is some ways that savvy retailers are separating themselves in the local e-commerce space today.

eBay Enterprise, for example, announced recently that its clients have racked up more than $1 billion in sales using its Store Fulfillment Solutions - in place at more than 6,500 stores (42 brands) across three continents. As consumers consider convenience a a matter of priority in their buying decision

Ship-from Store is a modular, cloud-based solution that makes physical store inventory available for sale online alongside warehouse inventory, enabling stores to fulfill ecommerce orders directly to the consumer. The solution, according to eBay Enterprise, can be deployed in 90 to 120 days. That three to four month deployment time is a good reminder that optimizing the e-commerce and retail experience is a year-round initiative and to have everything in place the next time the holidays roll around, you'll need to start considering solutions such as store fulfillment as soon as possible.

eBay Enterprise indicated that from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday in 2014, order volume via Ship-from Store and In-Store Pickup increased 34 percent and sales increased by 54 percent over 2013 in the US. Store Fulfillment orders saw the highest growth numbers on Thanksgiving Day with a 210 percent increase in sales, while same store sales for Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday increased by 62 percent over 2013.

Retailers including Ace Hardware, Shoe Carnival, Destination XL and Designer Shoe Warehouse have already deployed eBay Enterprise Store Fulfillment Solutions and it's providing a number of benefits to enterprises using it. Kent Zimmerman, vice president of ecommerce at Shoe Carnival explained, “We needed to reduce the operational cost and complexity of managing siloed inventory for ecommerce while providing the wide assortment of styles that our customer expects. We have the ability to make our entire inventory available to the customer, no matter where they’re located. It really sets the stage for us to truly become an omnichannel company in the eyes of the customer.”

“Store fulfillment solutions like Ship-from Store and In-Store Pickup give online consumers access to inventory across stores, distribution centers, and even suppliers to deliver goods at the best possible speed and cost while preserving the best possible margin for brands and retailers – boosting sales, enhancing the consumer experience and improving customer retention rates,” said Craig Hayman, president, eBay Enterprise. “Adopting omnichannel strategies like this will be critical for retailers in 2015.”
