A U.S. judge has granted final approval on a $20 million settlement against Facebook for a lawsuit over targeted advertising, once again highlighting the ongoing tension over user privacy and Facebook's focus on monetising user content.

The class action lawsuit against Facebook was filed in 2011 and sought recompense over the "Sponsored Stories" program which shared users' "likes" of certain advertisers with friends without paying those users or allowing them to opt out.
