Does your e-commerce property offer military or student discounts? How can you confirm these buyers qualify? Well, if you’re a Magento powered platform, you’ll now be able to use SheerID’s verification plugin to protect your most special, targeted discounts.

SheerID’s recently announced integration with Magento™ enables e-commerce retailers to create and promote codes and discounts on the Web that can only be redeemed by qualified customers who belong to “select” customer groups such as veterans, active-duty military, teachers, college students, or members of preferred non-profit associations.

The integration for Internet retailers seems straightforward. SheerID now provides a plugin that uses the SheerID API to provide the instant verification capabilities. The actual verification can happen at any point within a Magento™ site, including targeted landing pages (using CMS template tags) or by adding the SheerID Verify block to a layout. SheerID indicated that in the future capabilities will include the addition of catalog items that require verification and verified account registration for creating preferred customer accounts.

“SheerID is excited to provide a solution for Magento™ platform users who want to offer targeted discounts without risking their ROI or margins,” said SheerID CEO, Jake Weatherly. “SheerID has changed the face of online discounts. With SheerID, retailers can manage and track their special offers, expand their marketing, and deepen their discounts, all while eliminating fraud."

Besides informing readers of the existence of this SheerID service, is there a specific problem that this article was written to address?

Many times a web searcher can find discount codes getting picked up by the major "deals" sites like:

But then I wonder, is that such a bad thing?

Free advertising that goes viral (by means of a special offer and/or special discount codes being posted to "deals" forums such as Fatwallet or Slickdeals) can be a huge boost to a  website's traffic.

I think the only problem I can currently remember is when a semi-restricted class of customers got an offer intended only for them, posted on the websites: Fatwallet and/or Slickdeals.

One deal that comes to mind is the IEEE and/or ACM student membership software offer from a few  years back.

Someone posted the offer on both fatwallet and slickdeals.

The deal allowed "student members" of IEEE or ACM to get access to microsoft operating systems by joining the ACM or IEEE as "student members".

Since the ACM student membership was only like $19/year and included 100's of Microsft software product titles, it was only a few days or a week until the entire ACM student program was modified and WIN 7 WAS REMOVED!

So many people joined the ACM (just to get Win 7 for their home PC)  that ACM and/or microsoft  changed the terms of the ACM software offering.

They totally removed Win 7 from the ACM offer normally extended to student members.

What is provided to ACM Student Members through the ACM/MSDN AA Partnership?

Through ACM’s partnership with the Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance, ACM Student Members receive *free* and unlimited access to about 100+ software packages. Some of the software packages included are:

       Windows Vista

       Windows XP Professional

       Windows Server 2008

       Visual Studio 2008 Professional

       Visio Professional 2007

       Office Project Professional 2007

       Access 2007

       Visual Studio 2005 Team System

       SQL Server 2005

       Expression Studio

       Sharepoint Designer 2007

       Virtual PC 2007

       Virtual PC for Mac 7.0.2

       Visual C# 2005 Express Edition

       Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition

       And much, much more!

I can see restricting discounts to specific customer categories if a major discount i offered.

But still, if your intent is advertising something to as big of a group of potential customers as possible, word of mouth and/or viral postings to the major deals forums can give your offer a huge boost (as long as your website is able to handle the potential traffic)

in just a few hours or days.

Frank you made some good points. Sounds like SheerId is easy to implement. That is a plus.
