They were wrong. How wrong nobody really knew (except us - and maybe you - of course) and now we've got proof.    The Internet added 3.5 million websites (*a 1.7 percent increase over the third quarter*) during the last three months of 2010 according to **[Verisign's Domain Name Industry Brief](https://www.verisigninc.com/assets/domain-name-report-feb-2011.pdf)** (PDF), bringing the total number of domain name registrations to well over 205 million.    **Some interesting highlights from the report:** - The base of Country Code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs) was 80.1 million domain names, a 1.1 percent increase quarter over quarter, and a 0.3 percent increase year over year. - New .com and .net registrations totaled 7.6 million during the quarter. This is a 1.6 percent increase in new registrations from the third quarter. Year over year, new registrations increased 4 percent. - VeriSign's (NASDAQ: VRSN) database of ".com" and ".net" domains accounted for 105.2 million registrations, up 4 percent from a year ago.   ![](https://www.websitemagazine.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Imported_Blog_Media/totaldomainregistration-jan-2-1-1-1.png?width=413&height=575&name=totaldomainregistration-jan-2-1-1-1.png)   ![Pete Prestipino](https://www.websitemagazine.com/hubfs/Pete%20Prestipino.jpeg) [Pete Prestipino](https://www.websitemagazine.com/domains/author/pete-prestipino) Digital marketing executive with proven experience in all aspects of search engine optimization (SEO), performance-based advertising, consumer-generated/social media, email marketing, lead generation, Web design, usability, and analytics. - 20-year Internet marketing veteran, currently serving as the Digital Marketing Campaign Manager at Antenna Group (formerly Chicago Digital). - Former Editor-In-Chief of Website Magazine, and a regular speaker on Web technology digital marketing strategy - Author of several books on digital marketing Including Web 360: The Fundamentals of Web Success; Affiliate 360: The Fundamentals of Performance Marketing; Domains 360: The Fundamentals of Buying & Selling Domain Names, and SEO 360: The Fundamentals of Search Engine Optimization. - - - [mailto:peter@websitemagazine.com](mailto:peter@websitemagazine.com) #### Popular Post ### [Forwarding Domains to Affiliate Sites ![Forwarding Domains to Affiliate Sites](https://www.websitemagazine.com/hubfs/Imported_Blog_Media/gradient-regular-logo-mark-Jan-22-2023-11-42-04-7156-PM-Apr-10-2023-01-02-48-2468-PM-Apr-25-2023-03-00-20-8992-AM-May-01-2023-08-18-31-0301-PM.png)](https://www.websitemagazine.com/domains/forwarding-domains-to-affiliate-sites) ### [O.CO Goes to Overstock.com for 350K ![O.CO Goes to Overstock.com for 350K](https://www.websitemagazine.com/hubfs/Imported_Blog_Media/oco-mini-3-1-1-1.gif)](https://www.websitemagazine.com/domains/o-co-goes-to-overstock-com-for-350k) ### [Rethinking Domain Name Valuation ![Rethinking Domain Name Valuation](https://www.websitemagazine.com/hubfs/Imported_Blog_Media/godaddy-mini-3-1-1-1.jpg)](https://www.websitemagazine.com/domains/rethinking-domain-name-valuation) #### Subscribe to Our Newsletter!
