It is not an easy time to be in the digital advertising industry: ad blocking continues to threaten the digital ecosystem, Facebook (and Twitter) continually "correct" their reported ad metrics and fraud remains a serious issue.
In a lot of ways these challenges are enough for many brands to restrict their advertising investment and look elsewhere for new visitors and alternative opportunities to engage users, which could obviously be a significant problem for the entire digital ecosystem.
To give an idea of just how damaging the digital advertising fraud problem is, for example, consider a report released by White Ops in Dec. 2016 on an operation that has apparently been scamming U.S. advertisers out of $3-$5 million each day. White Ops discovered that "Methbot" was spawning non-human bot traffic that the spammers directed to fake Web pages (of mainstream sites such as the Economist, ESPN and the Wall Street Journal), which contained video ads from advertisers.
Despite the many obvious problems of the digital advertising industry, however, there are some very bright spots. Programmatic advertising has improved efficiency and enabled brands to effectively scale growth, and retargeting and personalization are helping enterprises rethink the optimal approach for acquiring new consumers and retaining existing clients.
